Ilmo Ranta has studied at the Sibelius Academy under the supervision of Liisa Pohjola, and he completed his diploma in 1984. He has completed his studies in Munich under the supervision of Klaus Schilde and e.g. György Sebök, in the master classes of Dmitri Bashkirov, Ralf Gothóni and Hartmut Höll. Today, Ranta works as a piano and chamber music lecturer at the Sibelius Academy.

After his first concert in Helsinki, Ilmo Ranta has given several solo concerts and performed as a soloist in many of our country’s leading orchestras. He has become known as a versatile chamber musician both in Finland and abroad. In particular, he is known as a leading Finnish lied pianist whose most famous singing partners have been Karita Mattila, Monica Groop, Lilli Paasikivi, Jorma Hynninen, Topi Lehtipuu and Petteri Salomaa. And recently with Piia Komsi.

Ranta is a respected performer of new music, and he has premiered and also recorded compositions by, among others, Paavo Heininen, Eero Hämeenniemi, Jouni Kaipainen, Usko Meriläinen and Esa-Pekka Salonen.
